CUSTOMER REVIEWS:
These things get moldy -

For years I've tried to figure out ways to keep my bass strings clean. Simply wiping with a dry cloth is not enough. I've tried wiping with rubbing alcohol, spraying with Finger Ease, soaking in paint thinner, and boiling in water. Boiling works great, but you have to remove the strings from your bass. "So," I wondered, "Is there some kind of a special cloth on the market with which I could wipe my strings and cut down on boiling sessions?"
Yes, Virginia, there is. Unfortunately, I'm not so sure about the "wonder" part. They do seem to help keep strings clean, but the coating the cloth imparts doesn't really keep them sounding crisp. It's basically like wiping your strings with a cloth lightly soaked in Finger Ease. They feel smoother, but I'm sure the grime is still down there in the wrap of my roundwounds.
Here's the other thing: I bought the large can of wipes four or five months ago. Didn't quite get the hang of using the dispenser, so the lid stays on the can and I just take out the roll and pull off sheets like paper towels. After a couple months, I noticed mildew growing on the edges of the roll. Yuck. Who wants to wipe their strings with a moldy rag?
However, since I'm cheap, I'm still using the wipes. I fold them over to keep the mold away. But I'm holding off using them until my strings have gotten fairly old, which for me is about thirty hours of use. After about 60 it's definitely time to boil. I just wonder if the mildew will cover the whole roll before I've used it up. (So, that's where they got the name!)
If you haven't used these, I recommend trying the small can first.
